Havana Year Zero by Karla Suarez, translated by Christina MacSweeney and published in 2020 by Charco Press was a pleasure to read, both for the novel, which had a great premise, a plot that was more complicated than the ease of reading might suggest and also because it was beautifully printed, with a good typeface on quality paper. It was the second novel I have read that has won the English Pen award.
The story married elements of genre fiction, investigative, historical and literary fiction together in a highly accomplished way that I found very satisfying. Each personality felt rounded and vibrant. This was a great read.
