Adrienne Yabouza's novel, Co-Wives, Co-Widows, was published by Dedalus Books in 2021 and in its original French in 2015. It was translated by Rachael McGill.
The title of this novel is an apt description of the theme of this book. Ndongo Passy and Grekpoubou are co-wives and then they become co-widows. The story describes the events that take place after their husband passes away and how they muster themselves. It's an easy read, the prose is very clear and accessible but culturally it was very different, educational and engaging.
"Ndongo Passy had guessed. The tears on the faces of all the neighbours could only mean that a great baobab tree had been uprooted. Georgine let go of Gbandagba, took the hands of the two women and murmured, 'Lidou is dead.'"
