When I picked up La Bastarda it was immediately obvious that this was a novel that would take me inside a life I have never lived. The opportunity to briefly exist in a country so different to my own, with very different but recognisable expectations of women and men was exciting. The sweet emotional responses of the protagonist as she made choices about her life that rubbed up alongside the conventions of Fang life meant that the story didn't disappoint.
The book, written in Spanish by Trifonia Melibea Obono and translated by Lawrence Schimel is banned in Equatorial Guinea and was published in English by Feminist Press at City University of New York (CUNY).
