Alphabet of the Night by Jean-Euphele Milce was first published in French in 2004. It was translated by Christopher Moncrieff and published by Pushkin Press in 2007. Written earlier than the other novels I have read, I considered whether to include it in my journey, whether I should seek out something from the last decade that was perhaps more current and rooted in the present day but ultimately it felt like a 21st century story that I wanted to read. My hard and fast rule is that anything I include here must be from the 21st century, preferably but not absolutely of the last 10 years. This was a novel about alienation and movement: effective, verbose, often beautiful in its expression.
