Beauty is a Wound by Eka Kurniawan, translated into English by Annie Tucker and published by Pushkin Press in 2016.

This novel was unusual, a mystical family saga that charts events around the Second World War, Dutch colonialism and resurrection. It's an unwinding, fantastical read that is sometimes gruesome but myth and folklore is gruesome and so is war and the aftermath of colonial rule. At the end of the novel I really felt I understood a lot more about 20th century Indonesia and its hardships.
