This Italian novel, Almarina by Valeria Parrella, was originally published in 2019. Translated from Italian to English by Alex Valente, my hardback copy was published in the United Kingdom in 2021 by John Murray Press.
This story slowly unfurled. A short book, it was still a slow burner and I was pleased to stick with it until the end. It did not dwell on the protagonist's past but built a quiet unity between the different parts of her life and by its close was a satisfyingly well-written, cohesive novel. With themes of renewal after death, in some ways it was very like Learning to Talk to Plants, the Spanish novel that I read in August, but it managed to strike a different yet similarly positive note.
