The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino, translated by Alexander O. Smith with Elye J. Alexander. This thriller was initially published in Japanese in 2005 as Yogisha X No Kenshin, the paperback that I read was published in 2012 by Abacus.

This was a contemporary bestseller, with over 2 million copies sold in Japan and the translation was an accessible, easy read. This was not the learning process that Friend or The House with the Stained Glass Window were and in retrospect I found the gender balance, the prominence of men in this novel, frustrating but I enjoyed it.

"After the detectives had been gone a good ten minutes, Ishigami stepped out into the hallway outside his apartment. He glanced next door. The light was on. He turned and went down the stairs.

It was quite a walk to the nearest public phone where he had a reasonable chance of not being observed. He didn't own a mobile phone, and he couldn't use the landline in his own apartment."
