A Life At Noon by Talasbek Asemkulov was translated from the original Kazakh into English by Shelley Fairweather-Vega. Published by the US imprint Three String Books in 2019, it was initially published in 2003.
This story of a boy growing up in Soviet Kazakhstan is loosely based on the history of Asemkulov. It was a fascinating window into Kazakh culture and history, teaching me many things I did not about, including the dombyra, a Kazakh stringed instrument. It was a sweet, emotional novel.
