Ukraine

Writer's picture: Nina Nina

Some time ago I read a little about the history of Western Ukraine and its borders through the Polish book I chose to read. Yesterday I finished Grey Bees; the protagonist, Sergey Sergeyich, is a resident of a small village in the Ukrainian grey zone. It's a warm book about having a home that I would have enjoyed regardless but it also gave me a better understanding of Eastern Ukraine since the annexation of Crimea. This story conveyed borders, assumptions, cultural tensions and military presence. This was a good novel to read now.

I read the Maclehose Press paperback edition of Grey Bees by Andrey Kurkov, published in 2021 and translated from the original Russian by Boris Dralyuk.
