Written in English, coming from a dominant culture, it's easy to find books written by people from the US in the native language, no translation required. Female, genre fiction was an obvious choice for this country and I could even choose a book published in the last year so I read To be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers. I picked up a signed first edition of this short novel from my local bookshop. It feels like a reflection of the depressed state of US politics, the difficult choices made by the protagonist, the slow disintegration of the status quo. It's definitely of its cultural moment, a moment many of us recognise as teetering on the brink of something different. It was contemporary, an enjoyable read and immediately afterwards I read her debut novel, which is as emotional but less heavy.
